I’m conflicted about this cartoon. It was posted by a polytheist I respect who believes that it’s lampooning polytheists, but when I read it, I thought it was more evenhanded in its mockery.
And I laughed out loud, like we used to in the old days, before we just typed “lol” rather than actually expending the effort.
To me, replacing “gods” with “cats” makes the idea that they’re all a single being a whole lot more ridiculous sounding. And if you’ve ever had a relationship with a cat, you know that they do not need you to be outraged on their behalf; what they need is your devotion. They can provide their own outrage quite nicely, in fact.
There are some valid reasons why some devotional polytheists (or hard polytheists, or just polytheists, if that works better for you) frequently feel marginalized by the Pagan community. Without knowing the source of this cartoon, I don’t see this as one of them. Am I alone in that?
